Depression

Depression or Major depressive disorder is a common and serious medical illness associated with diminished quality of life and in some cases mortality (suicide).

Depression is diagnosed by a prominent change in mood (low, tearful or irritable) in association with cognitive, vegatative and sometimes physical symptoms. Depression must be differentiated from grief or bereavement.

Treatment

Treatment includes a physical health assessment including blood tests to exclude biological causes of depressed mood and associated symptoms. Physical illnesses which could mimic depression include thyroid disorders, anemia and vitamin deficiencies.

Treatment generally includes psychotherapy and medication.

Treatment may be augmented by adopting regular schedules, adequate sleep, minimal alcohol use, regular exercise, mindfulness practice and other practical stress management skills.
